Tanzania Day 8

Student: Mackenzie OToole

Country: Tanzania

This morning I woke up around 9am in my super comfy hotel bed. i felt quite refreshed after a good night’s sleep. It honestly felt good to sleep in an air-conditioned room because of my sunburns, the cool air was soothing. Breakfast was at 9:30, so Ellie and I went down together. There was a buffet spread with many options to choose from. I ended up having some toast, cereal and a bit of fruit.

Originally, we were meant to leave after lunch today but plans changed because some people weren’t feeling the best. So we found out we’d be staying another night at the hotel. I sat by the pool for a bit (in a long sleeve shirt of course, no way was I risking making my sunburn worse).

We were supposed to go out and visit different gift shops today, but since we couldn’t leave, I made the most of the little gift shop inside the hotel. It’s owned by this young man who’s studying medicine right now. When he asked me what I was studying, I told him “travel and tourism,”. He told me he’s worked in travel and tourism for a while and completely fell in love with it, he even said he’s thinking about switching and studying tourism once he finishes his medicine degree! The shop itself was amazing and full of beautiful wooden carvings, jewelry, paintings etc. I shopped till I dropped. He was so appreciative too and mentioned he hadn’t had a single customer since the start of the month, so I was happy to support him.

For lunch, I had a grilled cheese style sandwich with some fries. The afternoon was super chilled. I either sat in my room or out on the balcony with Ellie and Phoebe. I even ended up having a little nap. From our balcony we had such an incredible view of Mount Kilimanjaro. You could clearly see the white snow at the top. i understand why they are so proud of it!

Later, I called my friend Maizie because I hadn’t had much of a chance to talk to her since being here. It was nice to speak to her. After the call, I went down for dinner. I ordered spaghetti bolognese and like always, it was delicious. Simple but simple is what i needed. I didn’t get dessert, but they had this weird sounding option called “elephant feet” (not actual elephant feet but bananas covered in dark chocolat) After dinner, Ellie, Phoebe, and I just went back to the room to hang out, talk and chill for a bit before going to sleep.

Goodnight from the Madridadi Hotel, again.
