Tanzania Day 12

Student: Mackenzie OToole

Country: Tanzania

This morning I woke up feeling a little off, but there was no way I was missing another day. I couldn’t eat any breakfast but I still sat at the table whilst a discussion was taking place. After breakfast, we all headed back to our rooms to get ready for the day.

At 9:30 am, we got on the bus and went to a coffee plantation. Once we arrived, they showed us the coffee plants and explained how they harvest them. I learned that the beans are ready to be picked when they turn red, so we picked some and went back to the main area where they process the coffee.

First, they deshelled the beans, the inside was a beige coloured seed. Then they smashed them in a large pot to remove any leftover shell. After that, the beans were filtered and placed over a fire in a stone pit, which is what turns them brown. They roasted them for about 10 minutes before bringing them back out to be crushed again until they turned into a powder. Once everything was ready, they served us the coffee we watched being made from start to finish (excluding the 4-5 year process of growing a coffee plant) I don’t drink coffee but it definitely tasted really good. Throughout the process, the staff sang and danced, which they do every time apparently.

After that, I played checkers with Ellie using a wooden board and bottle caps. We then walked over to a nearby waterfall. We couldn’t get close but it was still beautiful. I love waterfalls, they’re so peaceful and powerful. It amazes me how water streams always find their way to the same place.

Later, we visited a supermarket inside a mall. It had familiar and unfamiliar snacks. I bought something small, but I wasn’t really in the mood for snacks. After that we headed to KFC. It felt like forever, because it was already 1 pm when we left the mall and nearly 3 pm by the time we got our food. I just got a sandwich and some fries. We ate by the pool.

Once we got back, Phoebe, Ellie and I went to the room and chilled out before dinner. For dinner i had onion soup as an entree. Rice, meat, vegetables and spaghetti for main. It was a good day so i’m glad I pushed through even though I didn’t feel great this morning.
