TANZANIA
The trip didn’t exactly start off smoothly, I threw up on the bus not long after we left Fareham College at 5am. Not the best start, but I felt better as we arrived Gatwick Airport.
Our flight left Gatwick at 10:50am, and we had a 4-hour flight to Istanbul. After that, we had a 2 hour layover before boarding a 9 hour flight to Zanzibar. On that flight, we got cheesy noodles with bread, which honestly was so good! When we landed in Zanzibar, we stayed on the plane for about an hour, then took off again for a final 1 hour flight to Kilimanjaro Airport.
All together, we did around 24 hours of travelling, all and all it went smoothly. Once we landed, we got on a bus to the Vijiji hotel and finally arrived at 6am. Everyone was so tired. We slept until 11am and then had breakfast.
At 1pm, we had an introduction session with a local man named Zeka who talked to us about Tanzanian culture. I asked him how to greet people and how to say thank you, he was really friendly and so interesting to listen to. He told us about the minerals in the area, how people live, and how to respectfully act and speak with locals. One thing he said really stuck with me “You guys manage time, we make time.” That really made me reflect on the pace of life here compared to back home.
For dinner, we had cucumber soup as a starter, and then beef, rice, and vegetables for the main. It was really good.
