The day started as it ended the day prior with very heavy rain. We ate a hearty breakfast and put on our walking gear in the hope the rain would move on and we would get to spend time out in the field with the anti poaching rangers but as the morning went by the rain continued and our guide said it was not possible.
We had attended the central office of the Wildlife Management in Arusha in the morning who talked to us about the efforts being made to increase tourism and the students asked questions to gain further insight and about the animals.
Lunch today was at a new restaurant where they put on a Buffett especially for us and meant that we could try more different African food.
Our guide was very helpful and enabled us to visit the Shanna Project which is another local enterprise initiative enabling disabled people to work and live independently. The work includes using recycled glass bottles to make glass objects and beads for tourists. Whilst there we watched one of the staff make a beautiful drinking glass and they gave us all a glass heart necklace.
The weather did not change so our guide enabled us to re visit the African Art Centre so that people could purchase gifts.
Whilst there we spoke with a man who let us know that he owned the art centre and also the very large gift shop. The design of art centre is based on that of the Guggenheim Museum.
He spoke about the tanzanite gemstone and that he has a foundation for which every tanzanite piece sold in the shop 20% of the sale goes to the foundation he set up which helps support and purchase items such as wheelchairs, special care items for babies in hospital, medical equipment but also gives local people jobs.
The owner proudly showed his letter from the current King and Queen thanking him for designing tanzanite jewellery for the coronation.
We went to a bank on the way back to the lodge so that some of the students could change money into local currency which they were excited about seeing the bank notes and the animals printed on them.
