Kilimanjaro and a Maasai Welcome

Student: Charlotte Evans

Country: Tanzania

Today we visited the gate Mount Kilimanjaro! Although it was a very rainy day and we couldn’t see the mountain, it was amazing to say that we had stepped foot onto it! We had a really interesting talk from Hilda a guide who works with the climbers descending from the mountain. We then had a packed lunch that was prepared by Vijiji lodge and started making our way to Mweka wildlife college. They talked to everyone about the different college provisions they offer and how they teach their students. The told us that students had to have 100% attendance or they lost their place on the course! The group were then shown a Chagga Bolt Hole. This was built as a quick escape route and hiding spot during wars with the Maasai. This has now been declared a national heritage site and a tourist attraction for Tanzania.

We all had the opportunity to go down the stairs to have a look into the tunnels. This was really interesting as they explained that there were different sections to the tunnels such as a living room and a kitchen! Once we had the full tour of the college we headed to the Maasai tribe and our accommodation for the night. This was around a 2 hour drive but once we got there they welcomed us so well. On arrival they sung a welcome song which was so amazing to watch. They then sung another song to show how strong each person. During this they hold a competition on who can jump the highest! We were then shown to our accommodation for the night and sat down around a campfire before dinner. We sat with a member of the Maasai tribes and I asked about how he learned to speak English. He said that he had learned from all the visitors they have had. He went on to say he could speak, Swahili, English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese and Korean and that he had learned English in only a year! Mackenzie and Monique ended up have a conversation with him in French was was super interesting to watch. After dinner we settled down and got some sleep for the night.
