Day 11 – Snake Park

Student: Phoebe Shepherd

Country: Tanzania

Day 11 – Today we had breakfast at about 8:30, I had pancakes and syrup. We then left at about 9:30 to go to a snake park, the journey took about 1 hour to get there. When we got there we met with a guy that works there and he showed us all of the snakes they had and explained where they come from and how dangerous they are. We also saw the black mamba which is the most dangerous snake in Africa. We then got taken to the tortoises and I held a really big one, which was really cute. We then went to look at the crocodiles, there was about four and all looked very different. We also saw a vulture and an eagle, one of them was eating a baby chick in front of us, but this was just like they do in the wild, It was a bit unpleasant to see but it is the circle of life and how the animals survive. We also went to an enclosure for a snake and the man took it out so we could touch it. I touched it but it didn’t feel how I thought it would feel, it was very cold.

After that we went to a Maasai culture museum where a guide from the tribe met us and took us around explaining everything and giving us lots of information. It showed their houses when they first start making them and the houses when they had finished, they make their houses with sticks, cow dung, grass and mud. It only takes them about a week to make which I think is very impressive. They also explained that they would sleep on cow skin and leaves to make it comfy for them. He explained the roles of men and women and that men protect whilst women stay at the village and make houses, look after children and cook. Once we were finished there we went for lunch where there were so many cats, they were very cute. We then headed back to the vijiji lodge. Once we arrived back we chilled out in our rooms until dinner.
