A 20-year-old Digital T Level student at South Hampshire College Group has been awarded the prestigious Winchester Excellence Scholarship by University of Winchester, worth £1000.
Amanda Mpanga, 20, received this scholarship for embodying the values of University of Winchester: Love of Learning, Making a Difference and Individual & Shared Endeavour. Throughout her two years on her Digital Software Development T Level course at Southampton College, part of South Hampshire College Group, Amanda has showcased a strong personal endeavour to learning. She committed many hours weekly to independent study, always engaged well in lessons and volunteered for college open events and group projects. Now as she prepares to take the next step into higher education, the Winchester Excellence Scholarship will support her transition to university.
Amanda said: “I’m incredibly grateful to receive this scholarship from the University of Winchester. It’s given me a real confidence boost and will help support me as I begin university after my gap year, allowing me to focus on my studies and make the most of the opportunities ahead.”
Amanda chose the T Level in Digital Software Development because she was interested in technology and wanted a course that could offer her practical, real-world experience. The course gave her the confidence and clarity needed to know she wanted to continue studying in this field.
Amanda added: “I really enjoyed my time at Southampton College. The staff were supportive and I learned a lot both academically and personally. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a welcoming environment with great opportunities.”
Joe Hudson, Digital Lecturer at Southampton College, taught Amanda and commented: “Considering where Amanda started from, having no programming experience and relatively low confidence in starting, her progress and achievement has been outstanding, especially in this last year, where her work is often better than that of students who started the course already confident programmers. Across the board, from programming and problem solving to business context understanding and industry placement success, Amanda has achieved at a high level.
“Amanda exemplifies what sustained effort, intellectual curiosity, and a growth mindset can achieve. She has developed into a highly capable and confident student whose academic achievements reflect her dedication and passion for learning.”
