The Course in Detail

This short photography evening course is ideal for intermediate to beginner level students with some photographic experience or ability, that own a compact or SLR digital camera. It is also aimed at those who wish to extend and develop their creative and technical knowledge by working more independently in their approach to image making through a structured programme of study. You will be taught the basic camera operations and functions. You will gain a greater understanding of the various techniques involved in taking better photographs, along with improved knowledge of image composition and lighting. You will learn how to be creative and experimental with your images, and develop previously acquired skills to a more sophisticated level. This leisure course could open up opportunities to progress to our part-time Level 3 and Higher Education courses in photography. Important Notice Please note that all courses are subject to minimum numbers. If there are too few enrolments, the College may cancel the course. A place on your chosen course is not confirmed until enrolment is complete and any relevant fees are paid. There is no funding available for this course, so all students will be required to pay the full course fee. The course fee must be paid at least 3 weeks before start date. If you have any questions about this course, please contact us. Tel: 023 8048 4848 Email: enquiries@southampton-city.ac.uk

The course will initially cover the theory and practice of the basics of photography. Later further topics will be covered, that may include portraiture, landscape, wildlife, architecture, and still life. The main emphasis of the course is to develop and adapt ideas creatively, whilst improving your technical understanding of current (digital) and some past (film) technology. Each week you will be given an optional task to carry out after the session. The task will be focused on the topic you will have covered in the session. This allows you to practice and embed new knowledge. There is a basic Photoshop and Light room presentation included in the course. Please note that students wishing to learn how to manipulate images in more detail should consider looking specifically for Photoshop courses.

Classes take place in specially designed photography and art studios and involve a range of fun and engaging practical activities. Expert tutors are present at every class to guide and support you with your work, your ideas and help you to progress and achieve. There are no assessments or exams.
