The Course in Detail

This course will provide a broad introduction to the engineering sector as well as a focused introduction to latest advancements in engineering. You will develop and strengthen core skills while preparing for more specialist subjects at Level 5 or to enter employment with the qualities necessary for job roles that require some personal responsibility.

You will gain a wide range of scientific and engineering knowledge linked to practical skills obtained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios. Students are involved in vocational activities that help them to develop behaviours (the attitudes and approaches required for a competence) and transferable skills. Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and in the workplace.

The course is suitable for students progressing directly from level 3 qualifications such as T Levels or BTEC Nationals who are looking for a cost effective and flexible alternative to university. It will also suit people already employed in the engineering sector who are looking to develop their skills and knowledge to progress their career.

This course is designed to align with the occupational standards for the Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Higher Apprenticeship.

To achieve the Level 4 HNC, students will complete 8 mandatory units. These include:

  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Maths
  • Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)
  • Mechatronics
  • Mechanical Principles
  • Production Engineering for Manufacture
  • Quality and Process Improvement
  • Digital Principles

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You should have five GCSEs at grades 5-9 (including Maths, English and Science) or equivalent and a Level 3 qualification in an engineering related subject.

This Could Lead to

Upon successful completion of the Level 4 HNC, you can progress on to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND).

You will also be able to progress to on a suitable engineering degree at university. The HNC will give you sufficient credit to join a degree programme in year 2, subject to a successful application.
