The Course in Detail

If you wish to progress to professional and management level careers within the construction industry, then this part-time Higher National Certificate (HNC) is the perfect course for you.

The content of this Level 4 course, developed with the University of Portsmouth, is broad based and covers most standard aspects of building including:

  • Construction Information (Design Detailing)
  • Construction Science and Materials
  • Construction Technology
  • Construction Practice and Management
  • Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
  • Individual Construction Project

Teaching is conducted primarily through theoretical and real life scenarios which is supported by site visits, guest speakers and a range of simulated scenarios. The wide coverage of building subjects will allow you to have a better understanding of all aspects of building from design and costing, to contract and construction. The course is focused on the specific needs of the ‘contracting’ industry and will provide you with the requisite knowledge, concepts, techniques and skills to enable you to effectively fulfil their existing and future managerial responsibilities.

The HNC is offered as a day release programme over 2 years with an expectation for self-study for a minimum of 4 hours per week. You will be taught by experienced construction professional from various disciplines.

The course fees are set by the University of Portsmouth and may be subject to change – please see their website for details. Instalment plans and loans may be available to assist with this.
