Marine Electricians have an essential role in the evolving Maritime Industry. If you have strong maths skills, a passion for problem solving, and an interest in electrical, this could be the career for you.
In this Apprenticeship, you will learn to install, maintain, monitor, diagnose and repair a wide range of marine electrical and electronic systems. Under supervision, you will undertake work from inception through to completion, including designing solutions, producing the electrical work, and testing it.
You may work on boats in a workshop environment, on boats moored on hard standing near water, or in the water and you may also attend sea trials. Marine electricians often work in confined spaces, on or near water, aloft, or at height.
Safety will be of utmost importance and with the guidance of your employer and college classes, you will ensure all necessary precautions are taken. Your employer could be a boat manufacturer, refit and repair boatyard, marina, or specialist marine electrical and marine electronic company.
This apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of a Marine Electrician and covers key requirements to include:
You will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours through on and off-the-job training and are expected to attend College on a day release basis.
You will need to have relevant employment, and entry is subject to interview and assessment.
GCSE English and maths grade 4-9 (or Level 2 functional skills) are preferred.
On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will have the skills to work as a Marine Electrician and progress to further career opportunities in the marine sector. This could include a higher-level qualification such as an HNC or degree apprenticeship in marine electrical.
Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by a Professional Trainer.
Depending on the standard, we assess your competence through various methods, such as practical exams, assignments, interviews, project work, presentations or observations and we will also evaluate your portfolio of evidence, which documents your learning and progress throughout your apprenticeship with us.
The apprenticeship end-point assessment is the final evaluation stage of your apprenticeship programme. It's designed to determine whether you have achieved the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to meet the apprenticeship standard and perform the job role independently.
Successful completion of the end-point assessment is required to receive certification.
