The Course in Detail

Can you find faults in broken equipment, produce high-quality repairs, and communicate well with others? Step into a successful career with our Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.

You will work in an industry that is part of the national infrastructure engineering sector, such as electricity generating (including coal, gas, nuclear, wind and other renewable sources), oil and gas refining, sewerage, or pharmaceuticals.

With support from your employer and college classes, you will learn to maintain the safety, integrity, and effective operation of plant and equipment. Exact responsibilities will depend on your role and employer, but typically include installation, testing, servicing, maintenance and repair of a range of equipment, plant preparation, plant start-up and shut down, monitoring and controlling plant, and handling operational problems.

This Apprenticeship standard covers seven potential roles:

  • Electrical Technician
  • Mechanical Technician
  • Control and Instrumentation Technician
  • Wind Turbine Technician
  • Electrical System and Process Control Technician
  • Electromechanical Technician
  • Plant Operations Technician

This apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of a Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician and covers key requirements to include:

  • Operating and maintaining plant and equipment
  • Finding and fixing faults in plant and equipment
  • Assessing and testing plant and equipment
  • Environmental, health and safety law, regulations and standards
  • Engineering theory and principles relevant to your role
  • Interpreting technical specifications and documents
  • Specialist skills from electrics, mechanics to plant operations as required by your employer

You will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours through on and off-the-job training and are expected to attend College for pre-arranged masterclasses.

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You will need to have relevant employment, and entry is subject to interview and assessment.

GCSE English and maths grade 4/C or above (or Level 2 functional skills) are preferred.

This Could Lead to

On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will have the skills to work in the relevant job role and progress to further career opportunities in the engineering sector. This could include a higher-level qualification such as an HNC or degree apprenticeship in engineering.

 

Assessment

Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by a Professional Trainer.

Depending on the standard, we assess your competence through various methods, such as practical exams, assignments, interviews, project work, presentations or observations and we will also evaluate your portfolio of evidence, which documents your learning and progress throughout your apprenticeship with us.

The apprenticeship end-point assessment is the final evaluation stage of your apprenticeship programme. It's designed to determine whether you have achieved the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to meet the apprenticeship standard and perform the job role independently.

Successful completion of the end-point assessment is required to receive certification.
