The Course in Detail

Organisations increasingly rely on computer and communications systems in all areas of their operations and decision-making processes. It is therefore crucial to ensure the optimal performance and maintenance of systems. An Information Communications Technician (ICT) is critical to achieving this.

This Level 3 apprenticeship builds knowledge and understanding across key technical themes including data quality and types, modelling, and regulatory knowledge, as well as developing communication and presentation skills.

You will be responsible for prioritising systems support tasks as they arise and for monitoring and maintaining system performance. You may work alone or as part of a team but will escalate problems in line with your organisation’s policies and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

This apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of an Information Communications Technician and covers key requirements to include:

  • Provide technical support to customers both internal and external through a range of communication channels
  • Establish and diagnose ICT problems/faults using the required troubleshooting methodology and tools
  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, talking them through steps to take to resolve issues or set up systems, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation and expectations
  • Apply appropriate testing methodologies to hardware or software or cabling assets
  • Install and configure relevant software, hardware, and cabling tasks where appropriate to the job role

You will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours through on and off-the-job training and are expected to attend College for pre-arranged masterclasses.
