The Course in Detail

Our part-time Dental Nursing course is designed to provide hands-on experience in direct chair-side assistance and support during various dental treatments. This qualification covers essential aspects such as ethics, professionalism, teamwork, and communication, all crucial for a successful career as a Dental Nurse and for becoming a GDC registrant.

The course employs a variety of teaching methods, including:

  • Engaging lectures
  • Collaborative small and large group activities
  • Independent research projects
  • Practical skill demonstrations in our newly refurbished mock surgery
  • Real-world experience in the workplace
  • Assessor and lecturer support throughout

What you will learn:

You will learn a range of skills and best practises to support your knowledge and to help develop your skills as a dental nurse in areas such as;

  • Preparing for professional practice and understanding your responsibility as a dental care professional
  • Health and Safety
  • Cross infection prevention
  • Medical emergencies and first aid
  • Dental and regional anatomy
  • Oral conditions and dental assessments
  • Radiography
  • Restorative work such as prosthetics, restorations and endodontics
  • Minor oral surgery and extractions
  • Oral health and general health promotion

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You must be at least 18 years old
Be employed as a trainee dental nurse for a minimum of 16 hours per week
Have GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*- C), including English, or have successfully completed a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification

You will also be required to attend an interview as part of the application process

This Could Lead to

Completion of this qualification will enable students to register with the General Dental Council and find employment as a Dental Nurse. 

Students may then progress to qualifications in the following areas:

  • Dental sedation
  • Dental radiography
  • Dental technology
  • Oral health education
  • Special care dental nursing
  • Orthodontic nursing
  • Implant nursing
  • Impression taking
  • Fluoride Application
  • Dental practice management

With additional entry requirements, Dental Nursing can lead to other career pathways including Dental Therapist, Dental Hygienist, Orthodontic Therapist, Laboratory Technician, Senior Nurse, Practice Manager, Lecturer and Teacher and Assessor of Dental Students.
