The Course in Detail

This course is designed for students who want to pursue a career in manufacturing engineering and develop the ability to collaborate across different engineering disciplines, applying knowledge, skills, and understanding in a range of contexts.

Students will study eight core units covering:

  • Engineering principles and mathematics
  • Health and safety
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Interpreting and creating computer-aided engineering (CAE) drawings
  • Design and manufacture of products
  • Microcontroller systems design and programming
  • Manufacturing principles and systems

This course also has a number of optional units which allow students to specialise in a mix of electrical, electronic, mechanical, and other engineering areas, which may include:

  • Electronic devices and circuits
  • Electronic measurement and testing of circuits
  • Behaviour of metallic materials
  • Maintenance of mechanical systems
  • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Secondary machining processes

What You'll Need

You will need five GCSEs at grades 4-9, or equivalent (including English, maths and science)

This qualification supports progression to a variety of next steps. You can progress to degree level courses or university as well as apprenticeships or into a employment in the engineering sector.
