This course is designed for anyone looking to improve their knowledge and confidence in understanding self-harm, suicide, and how to provide appropriate support to individuals who may be at risk.
Self-harm and suicide are complex issues that can affect people from all backgrounds. This course will help you develop an understanding of the factors that may contribute to self-harm and suicidal thoughts, how to recognise potential signs and how supportive conversations and appropriate referrals can help individuals access further support.
Throughout the course, you’ll explore attitudes towards self-harm and suicide, ways to approach conversations sensitively and the importance of compassionate, person-centred support. You’ll also learn about prevention approaches, available support services and the impact of suicide on individuals, families and communities.
On this course, you’ll explore:
- What is meant by self-harm and suicide
- Factors and triggers that may contribute to self-harm or suicidal thoughts
- How society and the media can influence attitudes towards self-harm and suicide
- Signs, thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may indicate someone is at risk
- How to approach and support someone who may be self-harming or considering suicide
