The Course in Detail

This Level 2 course will provide you with an advanced level of knowledge and skills in marine engineering, enabling you to enter employment as a marine engineer or to progress your career in the marine industry. It covers marine engine maintenance, fault-finding, replacement of components and marine electrics.

You will benefit from our industry expert lecturers and will be taught in our dedicated marine engineering and marine electrical workshops at our brand-new specialist Maritime Centre of Excellence at Southampton College – opening September 2025!

During your study you will learn:

  • Safe and effective working in the marine industry
  • Business improvement techniques
  • Principles of marine construction and components
  • Installation, fault diagnosis and repair of marine engines
  • Installation and repair of marine propulsion systems
  • Installation and repair of marine engines

As part of the course you will also take part in industry trips and activities including networking events, industry visits and guest lectures. Previous events have included:

  • Southampton Boat Show
  • Guest speakers
  • Opportunities to work on industry and community projects
  • Work experience
  • Industry week activities

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 3-9, or equivalent, this must include a grade 4 or above in English and/or maths.

OR

Relevant Level 1 qualification (merit or distinction grade), including GCSE English and/or maths at grade 4 or above.

This Could Lead to

Once completed you may be able to progress onto the Level 3 T Level Maintenance Engineering Technologies: Mechanical (Maritime) or an advanced apprenticeship.

This course will open the doors to working in marine construction or marine engineering.
