The Course in Detail
This apprenticeship is exclusively for Boeing apprentices and is not open to external applicants.
The Level 2 Aviation Maintenance Mechanic apprenticeship (ST0014) develops the knowledge, practical engineering skills and professional behaviours needed to support aircraft maintenance in a safety-critical environment.
Delivered by South Hampshire College Group at CEMAST, the programme combines technical training with workplace learning, helping apprentices develop their understanding of aircraft maintenance, aviation safety and engineering practices.
What you will learn
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop the skills and knowledge to:
- Support aircraft inspections, maintenance activities, ground handling and replenishment tasks
- Use engineering tools, equipment and technical documentation safely and effectively
- Understand aviation safety, regulatory requirements, human factors and approved maintenance procedures
- Develop practical skills in hand fitting, aircraft fasteners, component assembly and introductory electrical and avionic applications
- Demonstrate professional behaviours, including teamwork, communication and accurate maintenance documentation
Course delivery
The apprenticeship typically lasts 18 months, followed by an end-point assessment period.
Training includes a structured 10-week technical block at CEMAST, alongside workplace learning at Boeing. This gives apprentices the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a working aviation environment.
Throughout the programme, apprentices build a portfolio of evidence using Onefile and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to demonstrate occupational competence.
Who is this apprenticeship for?
This apprenticeship is specifically for individuals recruited by Boeing. It supports Boeing’s workforce development through an established partnership with South Hampshire College Group.
Assessment
Throughout the Aviation Maintenance Mechanic apprenticeship, you will be assessed through practical activities, knowledge checks and evidence gathered during your training and workplace experience.
You will build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours you develop throughout the programme. Your progress will be reviewed with your training provider and employer to help ensure you are ready for your final assessment.
At the end of the apprenticeship, you will complete an independent End-Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:
- Multiple-choice test: Demonstrate your understanding of the technical knowledge required for the role.
- Practical observation with questions: Show your practical skills and safe working practices while carrying out maintenance-related activities.
- Interview supported by a portfolio of evidence: Discuss your experience and demonstrate how you have developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the apprenticeship standard.
You must meet the apprenticeship gateway requirements before progressing to the EPA. Successful completion leads to the Level 2 Aviation Maintenance Mechanic apprenticeship certificate.
Please note: This is not an open-enrolment course. You cannot apply directly to the college. All recruitments and selections are managed by Boeing.
Entry Requirements & Progression
What You'll Need
This apprenticeship is exclusively for Boeing apprentices.
Entry requirements are set by Boeing and typically include a core engineering background or relevant experience, alongside GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or above.
This Could Lead to
Successful completion provides a foundation for further development in aircraft maintenance and the wider aviation engineering sector. The typical progression route is to the Level 3 Aircraft Maintenance Technician apprenticeship, subject to employer requirements and available opportunities.
Assessment
Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by a Professional Trainer.
Depending on the apprenticeship standard, your competence will be assessed through a range of methods, including practical exams, assignments, interviews, project work, presentations and observations. We will also assess your portfolio of evidence, which documents your learning and progress throughout your apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship end-point assessment is the final stage of your apprenticeship. It is designed to determine whether you have achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to meet the apprenticeship standard and carry out your job role independently.
Successful completion of the end-point assessment is required to achieve your apprenticeship certificate.
