The Course in Detail
This 3 hour asbestos awareness course gives you a practical introduction to the risks of asbestos and how to stay safe. Designed for anyone who may come across asbestos at work, it covers what asbestos is, where it’s found, the dangers of exposure, and what to do if you discover it. The knowledge you gain will help you recognise risks and protect yourself.
Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:
- Operatives and Trades
- Supervision
- Management
- Leadership
The purpose of training delivered against this standard is to provide candidates with an understanding of the risks of exposure to asbestos and how to avoid work which may disturb asbestos-containing materials. The scope includes:
- The properties of asbestos and its effects on health
- The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in buildings and plant
- How to avoid the risk of exposure to asbestos
- The distinction between licensable work and non-licensed work (notifiable and non-notifiable)
- The procedures to follow with the discovery of asbestos containing materials
- The general procedures to deal with an emergency, such as an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace.
Training delivered against this standard will not prepare candidates to carry out work with asbestos-containing materials. Please note you will need to do a refresher every year
For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.
