Develop your practical English skills with our Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification. This nationally recognised qualification is a flexible alternative to GCSE English, designed to help you build confidence and apply English skills in everyday life, work and further study.
Functional Skills English focuses on real-life situations, helping you develop the reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication skills needed in a range of personal and professional settings. You’ll learn how to communicate clearly, understand written information and produce effective written documents for everyday use.
Throughout the course, you’ll work through structured modules covering the key areas of the Level 1 curriculum. Each module includes practice assessments, activities and opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for the Functional Skills assessment.
On this course, you’ll explore:
- How to identify facts and opinions within different types of texts
- How texts are created for different purposes, including informative, persuasive, descriptive and instructional writing
- Organisational features and techniques used to support understanding when reading
- How to understand unfamiliar and specialist words using appropriate resources
- Listening skills and how to identify information and respond appropriately to questions
- How to communicate ideas, express opinions and use effective language in different situations
- How to contribute to discussions and prepare information for presentations
- Punctuation, grammar and sentence structure to improve written communication
- Spelling techniques and how words are used correctly in different contexts
- The differences between formal and informal language and when each should be used
- How to structure and format different types of written communication, including letters and emails
