Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 including English Language and mathematics. In Carpentry, all learners begin at L1, this is to develop essential technical skills and knowledge needed to progress onto Level 2. All learners without a GCSE at grade A*-C or 9-4 in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme. Therefore, if you enter a programme with a Grade 3 in English or Maths, you will be required to take English or Maths as well. You may be asked to undertake a numeracy or literacy test such as BKSB. You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required. Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications. The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18. Fees may apply for 19+. On completion of Level 1, you will be interviewed to check suitability of progression to Level 2. Your attendance and behaviour will also be a deciding factor towards your progression as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.

This Could Lead to

This largely practical programme is for individuals who have a genuine interest in carpentry or joinery and wish to gain employment in the industry. Progression after the programme could be onto Level 2 Carpentry, Advanced Construction Award or employment in the industry; or an Apprenticeship. During the first year of the programme students will work towards Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery. Upon successful completion, you will be able to study at Level 2. Both of these qualifications have been developed to recognise certain skills and knowledge which are necessary to work in a particular occupation, but which do not cover the full range of competence demanded by NVQs. After completing the programme and demonstrating competence on site, you may wish to develop your skills further and work towards higher NVQs/ Diplomas in carpentry or joinery.
