The Course in Detail

Our Introductory Welding Skills course is hands-on course suitable for complete beginners, DIY enthusiasts, those looking for a new hobby, and anyone looking to take the first step into welding. 

There will be expert help and advice on hand to help you produce welds in the MMA (stick) and MIG welding processes. 

 

Students will learn: 

  • Safety First: Advice on personal protective equipment(PPE), ventilation/extraction and safe working practices. 

  • MMA (Stick Welding): Learn to strike and maintain a constant arc, select the correct electrodes(rods) learn the different techniques needed for welding different joints in metal fabrication and what to look out for to prevent any defects in your welds. 

  • MIG Welding: Ideal for thinner gauge materials. You will learn how to set up the MIG welding machine including the correct amperage/voltage, wire speed and gas flow to produce good quality welds. 

  • Techniques needed to be able to weld the most common fabrication joints such as Butt, Lap and T-Fillet in the down hand position, and also in the vertical up and down position.

What You'll Need

There are no entry requirements for our Adult Community Learning Courses. 

Our Adult Community Learning Co-ordinator will be in contact once we have received your application. 

Please note that this?course does not provide you with the qualifications to trade as a Welder.? 

Please note if you have an electrical or battery device for health reasons such as a pacemaker, please consult your doctor before booking on this course. The wearing of contact lenses is not permitted during this course. Devices such as hearing aids will be acceptable as these can be removed during welding or suitable ear protection can be worn.

Please note that you will need to purchase flame retardant overalls (boiler suit) and leather steel toe cap boots to take part in this course.

This Could Lead to

This course will give students the confidence to continue Welding projects at home. 

Students may also consider further training or courses within welding, including the qualifications offered by the college or other training providers.
