This is an online course, with weekly classes delivered remotely.
While all sessions are attended online, exams must be taken in person at Eastleigh College.
Students will work towards achieving either Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications.
The course runs over 20 weeks and includes five assessments: three focused on Speaking and Listening, one Reading exam, and one Writing exam.
Students will have the opportunity to sit exams twice within the 20-week period, depending on readiness as agreed by both the tutor and the student.
Each weekly session lasts three hours and covers all the essential skills needed for exam success.
Students will be assessed during the first weeks of the course. While initial assessments help determine the right starting point, students are expected to work at Level 1 or Level 2. A good understanding of English speaking, reading, and writing is essential.
This course is for Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust staff only.
Students who begin at Level 1 may progress to Level 2 if appropriate. Other progression routes include GCSE English Language, apprenticeships, further education courses.

College is not just about your course – it’s an opportunity to have fun, meet new people and explore your interests! You can socialise with friends in the café and comfy seating areas, join a club or sports team or attend exciting events around the college. Many of our enrichment opportunities are also great on your CV or UCAS application to demonstrate your commitment and enthusiasm outside of your studies.
Your time at college can also be affected by life or health difficulties, and it’s okay to need support. Our specialist teams are here every day to listen and give advice, whether it’s about career planning, financial support, mental health, or something else. And if you have a long-term support need or medical condition, we’ll work with you on personalised learning support to help you achieve your full potential.
