The Course in Detail

Computing for Beginners is designed as an introduction to the basics of using a home PC, aimed at individuals with little or no prior experience in computing. The course provides practical skills and knowledge to enable learners to confidently use computers for everyday tasks.

Topics include:

Understand system basics

  • Logging on and controlling the system.
  • Using input devices like the mouse and keyboard.
  • Basic navigation of the desktop, file explorer, and web browsers.

Use the internet effectively

  • Performing web searches and image searches.
  • Accessing and using platforms like Pinterest.
  • Understanding online safety, including password safety and phishing awareness.

Work with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Writing and formatting Word documents (e.g., recipes, hobbies).
  • Inserting images, using proofing tools, and adding special symbols.

Create Presentations

  • Using formatting tools, adding transitions, and incorporating images.

Manage Finances Using Spreadsheets

  • Creating a household budget sheet.
  • Using basic formulae and conditional formatting.

 

Students will acquire skills that they can apply in their daily lives, such as:

Staying Connected:

  • Using email and the internet to stay in touch with family, friends, and communities.
  • Researching topics of interest or hobbies online.

Managing Personal Finances:

  • Creating a budget to track expenses and income, making it easier to plan and save money.

  • Protecting personal information online by understanding password safety and recognising phishing attempts.

There are no formal entry requirements, all beginners welcome. The course is suitable for all adult learners aged 19 and over.
