GCSE and Functional Skills English
This course is designed to help you build confidence and improve your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It’s ideal if you haven’t yet achieved a GCSE English grade 4/C or above.
You’ll study either GCSE English Language or Functional Skills English, depending on what’s right for you.
Both options focus on developing your communication skills and encouraging you to engage with a broad and meaningful course of study. You’ll build skills to help you make informed choices about your next steps – whether that’s further education, employment, or everyday life.

This course is for learners aged 19 or over on 1st September.

Courses are available at a range of times, days and locations.
Course fees
If you haven’t already achieved a GCSE English grade 4/C or above, this course is free.
None. After application you will be offered to visit your college of choice for an introduction session which will include a short assessment, the results of which will help to determine whether you are offered Functional Skills or GCSE.
There will be both English Lecturers and Careers Advisors present to support and advise you accordingly so please don’t worry.
Please note attendance to an introduction session is required.
Depending on your starting point, you may progress from Level 1 to Level 2 Functional Skills English, then on to GCSE English. Other progression routes include apprenticeships and further study.
Achieving GCSE English at grade 4 or above can open the door to a wide range of courses and career opportunities, as it’s often the minimum requirement for further education or job applications.
