Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to https://shcg.ac.uk/

This website is run by South Hampshire College Group

We know that disabled people may experience difficulty using parts of this website. We are very sorry for this. We are working to identify and fix the issues, and to improve access for everyone.

How accessible this website is

We know that some parts of this website are not fully accessible.

The issues identified affect a range of interactions and content across the site, particularly where pages rely on dynamic behaviour, reusable components, or complex layouts.

These issues may affect users who rely on screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, mobile assistive technologies, high levels of zoom, or alternative pointing methods. In some cases, these issues may prevent users from accessing content or completing key tasks.

Examples of the types of accessibility issues identified include:

  • Some interactive elements are not fully accessible using a keyboard, or cannot be reached in a logical order
  • Focus behaviour is inconsistent, with focus not always visible, moving unexpectedly, or becoming obscured by other elements
  • Navigation components do not always behave consistently, including links that act as same-page anchors rather than standard page navigation
  • Some links and controls do not have clear or unique accessible names, particularly where icons or repeated controls are used
  • Structural markup is not always used correctly, including issues with headings, lists, and grouping of related content
  • ARIA attributes are sometimes used incorrectly or in place of appropriate semantic HTML
  • Some form controls are not properly labelled or grouped, and error messages are not always clearly identified or announced
  • Images, iframes, and other non-text content do not always have appropriate alternative text or accessible names
  • Some content relies on visual presentation alone, such as colour or layout, which may reduce clarity for some users

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations (WCAG 2.2 AA)

Level A

1.1.1 Non-text Content

Some non-text content does not have appropriate text alternatives. This includes images, icons, and other non-text elements where the purpose or meaning is not consistently conveyed to users of assistive technology.

1.3.1 Info and Relationships

Information, structure, and relationships are not always programmatically determined. This includes issues with headings, lists, grouping, and other content that relies on visual layout rather than semantic structure.

1.4.1 Use of Colour

Some information is conveyed using colour alone, without an additional visual cue, making it harder for some users to identify interactive content.

2.1.1 Keyboard

Some functionality is not fully operable using a keyboard alone, or users are unable to reach or activate controls using keyboard navigation.

2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide

Some moving or updating content does not provide a clear mechanism to pause, stop, or control it.

2.4.1 Bypass Blocks

There is not always a mechanism to allow users to bypass repeated blocks of content, or the mechanism provided does not function correctly.

2.4.3 Focus Order

Focus does not always move in a logical and predictable order, particularly when interacting with same-page links, dynamic controls, and page updates.

2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context)

The purpose of some links and controls is not always clear from their context.

3.3.2 Labels or Instructions

Some form controls do not provide clear labels or instructions, making it difficult for users to understand what information is required.

4.1.2 Name, Role, Value

Some user interface components do not expose correct names, roles, values, or states to assistive technologies.

Level AA

1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum)

Some text and interface elements do not provide sufficient contrast, making them difficult to read for users with visual impairments.

1.4.10 Reflow

Content does not always reflow correctly at higher zoom levels, making some information or controls harder to access.

2.4.6 Headings and Labels

Headings and labels are not always clear, consistent, or descriptive enough to help users understand the structure or purpose of content.

2.4.7 Focus Visible

Keyboard focus is not always clearly visible, or relies on subtle visual changes that are difficult to perceive.

2.4.11 Focus Not Obscured (Minimum)

Focused elements are sometimes obscured by other interface components, making it difficult for users to see where they are on the page.

3.2.3 Consistent Navigation

Navigation does not always behave consistently across the site, which can make it harder for users to predict where links will take them.

4.1.3 Status Messages

Status messages, alerts, and error messages are not always announced to users of assistive technologies.

We are currently reviewing and prioritising these issues. We will publish target dates for remediation following this review.

Disproportionate burden

We have not identified any disproportionate burden at this time.

Content not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. We are reviewing these documents and will prioritise remediation or replacement with accessible HTML where appropriate.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018  if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are currently reviewing and prioritising these issues. We will publish target dates for remediation following this review.

We will update the accessibility statement when issues are fixed or when we expect them to be fixed.
