Safari Walk

Student: Charlotte Evans

Country: Tanzania

Today we woke up after spending the night with the Maasai. It was incredible to walk outside and see the views around. The Maasai are situated right in between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru so the views were amazing. We all had some breakfast on the benches outside and got ready for the safari walk. We set out on the walk which was around 3 hours long. We were being guided by a Maasai leader so he knew exactly where to take us to hopefully see some animals! The first animal we saw was a zebra! Then as soon as it spotted us lots of zebras and gazelles came running out it was amazing! The next animals we saw was wilder beast in the distance. As we kept walking we found some shade to have a rest. We ended up sitting with a great view of Mount Meru and all the wilder beast, zebra and gazelles were grazing in front of it. After some well needed rest we were out walking again. Our guide climbed up on a very high rock which they use as a viewing platform to look for animals. He said that he could see some giraffes in the distance! We headed in the direction straight away being very quiet, after a little bit of searching we spotted our first giraffe in the distance.

We ended up getting really close and had an amazing view. Once the giraffe’s had spotted us they started running away but it kind of felt as though they were running in slow motion, it was amazing to watch! After seeing the giraffe we were all pretty tired as it had been a very long walk in hot weather so the bus came to get us from the meeting point and we headed back to the Maasai tribes. We were welcomed again by the tribes on our return and then they provided us some lunch. The group then had the opportunity to go to the Maasai museum and their leader gave them an insight to the history of the tribes and some students did some bead work with the Maasai too! We then got ready to go to our next accommodation. On the drive we had another opportunity to see all giraffe and we had an amazing view! Once we got to the hotel we all unpacked and rounded off the day with a nice meal.
