The Course in Detail

This one-year course will help you develop communication, interpersonal and counselling skills, while building a strong foundation in counselling theory. You will gain opportunities to develop practical counselling skills alongside self-awareness, self-assessment and personal development. On successful completion, you will achieve the SEG Awards Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills.

This Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) course has been developed collaboratively with awarding organisation partners and provides 18 credits across 125 guided learning hours. Delivered face to face, the course combines taught sessions, self-study, group work and practical activities, with two online Saturday workshops included during the year.

You will explore the main theoretical approaches to counselling, with a strong focus on the Person-Centred Approach. Egan’s Three Stage Model of Helping will also be introduced to provide a structured framework for developing helping skills and understanding integrative approaches to counselling.

The Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills aims to:

  • Develop a strong foundation of interpersonal and counselling skills
  • Introduce experiential learning and personal development processes, including building confidence and self-esteem
  • Underpin counselling skills with an understanding of key counselling theories
  • Increase self-awareness and understanding of the impact individuals have on others
  • Provide insight into counselling training and help students decide whether vocational counselling training is the right progression route
  • Prepare students to progress onto further appropriate qualifications

Throughout the course, you will be expected to monitor and reflect on your own learning and practice, develop criteria for self-assessment, and demonstrate the application of your knowledge and skills. Independent study and practice between sessions are essential, with a recommended minimum of four hours per week.

Assessment is continuous and includes lecturer, peer and self-assessment. All work is internally assessed and externally moderated by SEG Awards. As this qualification may be subject to review, we reserve the right to make changes in line with awarding organisation guidelines to ensure the most up-to-date learning experience and qualification award.
