The Course in Detail

This updated qualification is for care workers who want to develop their knowledge and skills in their areas of responsibility. This will enable them to lead others in areas relevant to all aspects of care work such as person-centred practice and personal well-being.

The content is appropriate for learners in a variety of settings in adult social care including residential care, domiciliary care or day centres. It is also suitable for lead personal assistants who work as part of a personal assistant team at a senior level. To achieve the Level 3 Diploma, learners will complete the following mandatory units:

  • Promoting effective communication in care settings
  • Effective handling of information in care settings
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) in care settings
  • Promoting personal wellbeing
  • Promoting person-centred practice in care settings
  • Promoting choice and independence in care settings
  • Promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights in care settings
  • Promoting general health and safety in care settings
  • Promoting infection prevention and control in care settings
  • Care worker responsibilities and ways of working
  • The principles of duty of care in care settings
  • The principles of safeguarding and protection in care settings
  • The principles of the mental capacity and restrictive practice and care settings

Alongside the above mandatory units, learners will pick from a selection 134 of optional units based on their work setting and job role. The optional units will be chosen with support from the learners assessor, who has occupational experience.

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

Learners will have responsibility for providing person-centred, values-driven care and support for those accessing a service. The learner will work under the direction of a manager or supervisor but will have a degree of autonomy. As well as demonstrating best practice, they will be working towards promoting and modelling it. Learners may or may not have supervisory responsibilities for others.

Learners will most likely be working in the following settings: 

  • residential or nursing homes
  • domiciliary care
  • day centres
  • healthcare

This Could Lead to

On successful completion of this qualification, learners who are in a supervisory or senior role may wish to continue their development by undertaking one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 4/5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Care (RQF)
  • Specialist qualifications in adult care or healthcare
  • Qualifications in coaching or mentoring
