The Course in Detail

Would you like to see English Language as more than just information and words? Do you want to unlock your potential and achieve a nationally recognised qualification many employers are seeking? Perhaps your goal is to access higher academic and vocational qualifications, or even university? Or maybe it is just for your own interest and self-esteem. If this all sounds appealing, then GCSE English here at South Hampshire College Group could be for you!

Throughout the year long course, you will be using a range of different styles of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, to learn how to analyse and interpret what is written – after all, we can’t believe everything we read!

You will also have the opportunity to be creative and persuasive in your own writing, using tried and tested techniques while developing your own personal style. And of course, you will be using regular feedback to make improvements in all areas, including the basic foundations of Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

As your skills develop, you will know how to approach questions in the final exams so that you are fully prepared and ready to achieve! The course ends in early June with two exams which will determine your overall grade. Both exams must be sat on the set dates, and therefore you need to be available for both of these. Dates will be given at the start of the course.

Learning at South Hampshire College Group in our part time provision provides an approachable, friendly and focused environment where students feel safe and confident regardless of their previous levels and experiences in education. Teachers truly understand the diverse range of hurdles that some adults face when returning to the classroom, sometimes after several years. Whether you are freshly out of learning and need to get that elusive GCSE pass, have children you need to help and keep up with to support their school work, require a grade for vocational purposes, or just want to prove to yourself you can do it, we welcome you. A range of methods, such as flipped learning, videos, discussions, individual research, workshop sessions and regular assessment style practice questions, are used to build all the skills required for your final exams.

This course is only available to applicants aged 19+ as at 1st September.

Various course days, times and locations are available.

Note – this GCSE English course is free if you have not already achieved this qualification at grade 4/C or above.

What You'll Need

Evidence of grade 3/D in GCSE English or equivalent will be required. Prior to enrolment, you will be assessed as to your suitability for the course and level.

This is nothing to worry about, and in the rare instances that GCSE is not suitable, we will refer you to our Functional Skills class, which will give you the confidence and foundations to move on to GCSE at a later date, if you wish.

Information about our Functional Skills classes can be found here on the website. Once you are accepted on to the course, we encourage you to read newspapers, articles and any fiction/non-fiction books of your choice, in order to begin developing your interest and skills within the subject. We also ask you to bring your own ring binder, paper, pen, highlighters etc., and would expect you to be able to commit to regular attendance. Some homework (directed study) is also required.
