The Course in Detail

This Level 4 practical art and design course will particularly benefit you if you have a desire to work in the creative arts industry or are currently working within the profession. It will provide you with a range of creative experiences and will enable you to experiment and develop your skills in drawing, painting, textiles, fashion, photography, printing, graphics and sculpture/3D methods. The year ends with a professional art exhibition where you can showcase your work to the public, local employers and higher education institutions.

You will be supported in developing a highly individual, ideas based portfolio, pursuing your own specialist interests including theory, materials and techniques. This includes:

  • Visual communication in art and design
  • Ideas generation and development in art and design
  • Contextual studies, art theory and cultural referencing in art and design
  • Communication with images in art and design
  • Traditional and experimental materials, processes and techniques
  • Digital media and lens-based recording techniques
  • Professional practice in art and design
  • Exhibition management and curation

The HNC in Art & Design is classified as a full-time course but you will only be required to attend college two days per week. It is equivalent to the first year of study on an undergraduate degree at university.

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

You will require a Level 3 qualification in art, design, photography, media or other relevant subject (such as an A Level or T Level in a creative subject or a foundation or extended diploma). A strong creative portfolio of work to be presented at interview.

You may be considered without formal qualifications if your skills and experience are of an appropriate standard – this would be assessed at interview.

This Could Lead to

Upon successful completion of the Level 4 HNC, you can progress on to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Art & Design to demonstrate further knowledge and competence in the sector. This qualification will also give you the opportunity to top-up to a suitable creative arts degree at university.

Alternatively you may consider freelance work, or working in graphic design, illustration, fine art, fashion, textiles, 3D design, interior design, animation, art history, digital media, curatorship, art journalism or teaching.
