This Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Film and Television is ideal if you are looking to embark upon a range of different careers within the creative media industries, and particularly those in film and television. It is equivalent to the first year of study on an undergraduate degree at university and will suit students moving up from Level 3 qualifications who are looking for an alternative to progressing to a university environment. Applications are also very much welcomed from adults looking to develop their skills in this field.
Your timetable will include 12 hours of taught sessions per week and you will be expected to be spending an equivalent amount of time working independently on your assignments away from class.
You will complete a number of formative projects to develop your practical skills in film and television production before embarking on two major assessment projects.
In the first half of the course, you will collaborate with other students to form a production company and create moving image promotional material for local music acts. This will include developing treatments for music videos based on meetings with the artists, completing all necessary pre-production work, shooting, editing and delivering the final products. You will work with your clients to produce a range of materials they can use as part of the promotion of their band, including music videos, live TV studio performances, a portfolio of photography as other assorted content for social media.
In the second half of the course, you will individually devise, plan, shoot and edit an original short film in response to a brief. To prepare you for this project, you will study short film as a form as well as relevant film theory to help develop your ideas.
Assessment will be through a portfolio of evidence completed during the production of your two projects, there are no exams on this course. You will be assessed against five key criteria: contextual knowledge, ideas generation and development, technical skill, professional practice, and communication.
