The Course in Detail

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Music takes a unique and pioneering approach to training. Understanding that many of our musicians intend to make a career in the arts, entertainment and education industries, the HNC in Music can be combined with a teaching qualification that will further enhance musical skill and help young musicians to understand the theory behind effective music teaching, while building their ability to plan and deliver teaching activities. It is equivalent to the first year of study on an undergraduate degree at university.

You will be expected to work independently to professional standards in our state-of-the-art rehearsal and digital recording studios.

This programme aims to:

  • Provide knowledge of the fundamental aspects of music, music technology and instrumental teaching
  • Enable the development of practical skills in music performance and technology
  • Focus on the knowledge, skills and understanding required to support learning in a range of vocational settings
  • Develop the professional skills needed to meet real-life musical situations
  • Develop employability, through the personal, critical and transferable skills that work effectively across a variety of music industry settings
  • Provide an opportunity to create a professional portfolio of both performance and recorded work

Entry Requirements & Progression

What You'll Need

Minimum requirements are a Level 3 Diploma or A Levels in relevant subjects and an audition and interview. If you do not have the UCAS point requirements, but have appropriate experience, specific knowledge or industry-based qualifications, then your application is still welcomed.

This Could Lead to

Successful completion of this Level 4 HNC course will enable you to progress onto a number of different Higher Education courses, such as a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) or BA (Hons) degree programmes at university.
