The Course in Detail

Are you looking to start a career or develop your existing skills in the marine industry? Learn and grow on the job through our Boat Builder Apprenticeship.

On the apprenticeship, you will be building, refitting and repairing marine craft, such as yachts, workboats and superyachts. This involves manufacturing and assembling components, as well as working on the interior and exterior of the boats, for example constructing frameworks, hulls and decks.

You’ll learn to read and interpret engineering and technical drawings to produce moulds, jigs, plugs and templates and use a variety of measuring equipment, machines and hand tools. You will be taught by your employer and college classes, building your carpentry, electrical, plumbing and welding skills to become a confident and professional marine Boat Builder.

This apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of a Boat Builder and covers key requirements to include:

  • Manufacture, assemble/disassemble and repair components to the required specification
  • Work with a variety of materials, including composites, metals and wood
  • Produce and use jigs and templates as required
  • Check components for robustness, fit and tolerances
  • Read and interpret engineering and technical drawings

You will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours through on and off-the-job training and are expected to attend College on a day release basis.
