The Course in Detail

Do you have a fascination for understanding, fixing, and improving motor vehicles? Can you deliver high-quality practical work alongside excellent customer care?

In this Apprenticeship, you will learn to work on all aspects of light motor vehicles. Day-to-day tasks will range from replacing simple parts to solving complex faults with diagnostic methods and equipment.

Your job role might exist in a large dealership, focused on a particular manufacturer, or in a smaller independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles. Among technical skills, you will learn to understand how the business works from a commercial perspective and identify ways of working more sustainably and efficiently.

The Automotive Retail industry is constantly evolving, driven by the development of new technologies such as the growing number of zero emission vehicles. This apprenticeship will give you highly sought-after skills and experience to deliver a robust, effective, and reliable service to customers and your employer.

This apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of a Motor Vehicle Technician and covers key requirements to include:

  • Steering and suspension geometries; electrical circuit requirements and calculations
  • Construction and operation of vehicle components and systems
  • Common fault types, causes and effects of different types of faults
  • The implications and legal requirements of fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications
  • Construction and operation of advanced electrical, braking and suspension systems, engine and transmission systems and engine and gear calculations
  • Alternative fuels and hybrid and electric systems
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe workshop
  • Building relationships and paying attention to customers concerns and needs

You will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours through on and off-the-job training and are expected to attend College on a day release basis.

What You'll Need

You will need to have relevant employment, and entry is subject to interview and assessment.

GCSE English and maths grade 4-9 (or Level 2 functional skills) are preferred.

Completion of this apprenticeship provides the foundation for progression into a number of career paths such as Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician, Automotive Engineer, Car Mechanic, Electric Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician, and Hybrid Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician.

 

Assessment

Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by a Professional Trainer.

Depending on the standard, we assess your competence through various methods, such as practical exams, assignments, interviews, project work, presentations or observations and we will also evaluate your portfolio of evidence, which documents your learning and progress throughout your apprenticeship with us.

The apprenticeship end-point assessment is the final evaluation stage of your apprenticeship programme. It's designed to determine whether you have achieved the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to meet the apprenticeship standard and perform the job role independently.

Successful completion of the end-point assessment is required to receive certification.
