The Course in Detail

This course provides a mixture of both core and specialist knowledge over a two year period. Students will be expected to carry out extensive work experience to develop their skills and knowledge. High standards of attire are a strict requirement during your course and will include a set college uniform. Text books relating to your course will be available and these are essential for your learning.

As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will either need to be working or be on a practical placement, during the taught programme of study and therefore will also require a clear Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS).

The course starts with students learning the core knowledge for the Health sector. This includes consideration of the following 13 aspects.

  • Working within the health and science sector
  • Health, safety and environmental regulations in the health and science sector
  • Managing information and data within health and science sector
  • Managing personal information
  • Good scientific and clinical practice
  • Core scientific concepts
  • The healthcare sector
  • Providing person centred care
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Further science concepts
  • Health and safety regulations applicable in the healthcare sector
  • Safeguarding
  • Infection prevention and control in the health specific settings

Students then develop specialist knowledge required for this particular sector. This includes showing competence of the knowledge and skills of following performance outcomes.

  • Carry out a range of therapeutic techniques to support Allied health professionals
  • Assist with the therapy support process and provide advice to help individuals develop and improve their health and/or develop or maintain skills for daily living
  • Prepare and maintain the therapeutic environment, equipment and resources for use

Core knowledge is assessed through an Employer Set Project and an externally marked exam. These elements are combined to provide a final grade between A*-U.

The specialist knowledge ensures students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve ‘competence’ in Supporting Therapy Teams. Students will be assessed by synoptic assessments and observations that are carried out while on their work placements.
