The Course in Detail

This three-week course in the lead up for Christmas will give you a different festive floral arrangement to take home each week.

Week one: Christmas vase arrangement and bouquet. You will learn how to make a Christmassy bouquet using a mix of foraged items, such as twigs, holly, and pinecones, and long stem flowers, such as roses, blooms, lisianthus, as well as accessories like spray glitter and snow. After creating your bouquet, you will learn how to transfer your arrangement to a vase to display in your home.

Week two: Door swag. You will create a gorgeous door swag ready to greet Christmas visitors and guests. You will learn methods to create a swag design while incorporating foraged items, long-lasting flowers, and tree decorations.

Week three: Setting your table. You will learn how to make a table arrangement, including a centrepiece and matching place settings, that will wow your dinner guests. This arrangement will use a variety of materials, including forage, flowers, dried fruits, tree decorations, and candles.

You will be taught by a tutor who has over 15 years’ experience in floristry and runs her own business – Hummingbird Creations in Hedge End. She is passionate about passing on her skills and promoting sustainable floristry that is accessible to all. Your tutor will be patient, passionate, and knowledgeable. The sessions will be informative, practical and fun, in a supportive and friendly group of likeminded adults. There is no formal assessment or exam. You will be taught through a mixture of presentation, discussion & practical tasks. A South Hampshire College Group certificate can be awarded on request following successful completion of the course.

A basic floristry toolbox will be required consisting of multipurpose floristry scissors, Sellotape and dispenser, a bucket, apron, and stapler. Some materials will be provided for your course. However, you will need to provide your own flowers each week. The approximate cost of this would be £10-£20 each week, but all additional costs and the amount spent is purely at the student’s discretion. Economy is always encouraged, and you are able to use a range of materials (fresh, artificial, preserved), as well as using flowers from your own garden or foraged materials if applicable. Some displays may be able to be deconstructed and the materials used the following week should you wish.
